Device manufacturer LG has halted production on its Nexus 4
smartphone line, a good indicator that the company may be preparing for
the next iteration of the Google Nexus.
During CES 2013 LG Electronics senior vice president James Fisher hinted at the Nexus 4 being only the “first of many” Nexus
products to arrive courtesy of LG. While Fisher did not explain if his
comment was geared towards smartphones or tablets the recent halt in
production of the Nexus 4 may answer part of that question.
Many analysts believe the Google Nexus 5 will be produced by LG and announced at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in February.
When first released in November the Google Nexus 4
was met with decent reviews and sold out in just 24 minutes from the
time of its release in the Google Play Store. Having oversold the Nexus 4
some customers were forced to wait upwards of three weeks to receive
their devices.
While the Nexus 4 was quick to sell out the actual sales numbers for
the device have been placed at a rather lousy 400,000 units, far below
the 40 million Samsung Galaxy S III devices that have sold over the last
seven months.
While not much is known about the Google Nexus 4 it is believed to feature a 2GHz quad-core processor and possibly the Google Android 4.3 Key Lime Pie operating system.
LG still has plenty of competition from other manufacturers, for
example the Samsung Nexus 10 and the Asus Nexus 7 have also been well
received, despite massive sales numbers.
While the LG device could debut in Barcelona this February, it is far
more likely that the Google Nexus 5 will make its first official debut
during the next Google I/O event which is scheduled for May 15 through
May 17, 2013.
